WB Aid Of $372 Million To Improve Coastal Zone, Water Supply Projects

The World Bank has approved two projects worth $372 million to India, consisting of a $222-million IDA credit for the integrated coastal zone management project ICZMP and a $150-million IDA credit in additional financing for the ongoing Karnataka rural water supply and sanitation project KRWSS, according to a release.

India unique coastal and marine ecological resources continue to be under stress from rapid urban-industrialisation and from increasing coastal hazards, putting the health of some 63 million people living in the low-elevation coastal areas in jeopardy......

Rajasthan Focus Now On Water Harvesting

The Rajasthan Government Labour and Employment Department will take up construction of water harvesting structures in its offices where space is available and plant trees during the coming monsoon season.

According to Principal Labour Secretary Manohar Kant here on Tuesday, this would be a significant addition to State-wide efforts for water conservation and would promote awareness among the staff to make optimum use of the rain waters......

Rational Use Of Groundwater

The Planning Commission advice to the Haryana government to levy a cess on agricultural power to raise funds for replenishing dwindling groundwater is wise counsel that is likely to fall on deaf ears. There is no denying that the continuous decline in groundwater levels across the subcontinent and weak attempts at replenishment constitute a grave threat to human security in this part of the world. Haryana is not a lonely sinner.

Punjab, western Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan in its vicinity are equally guilty of extracting more groundwater than is naturally replenished, causing the water table to decline sharply. Though the gains from tapping groundwater for crop production have, in the past, been spectacular, it has now reached a stage where it is jeopardising the future of agriculture in this key bread basket of the country......

Corporation Puts Up Rainwater Harvesting Structure

The Coimbatore Corporation has put up a rainwater harvesting structure measuring around 200 sq.ft. At Chinthamani Nagar of Ward 62, with the twin objective of recharging the aquifer and also solving a 20-year problem of water stagnation.

The civic body has used a reserved site, north of NSR Road, to put up the structure 15 ft below the road level. “The structure runs another 15 ft deep. Siruthuli a public initiative for water resources conservation has sunk a 280-ft deep bore well,” Mayor R. Venkatachalam said on Monday......

SHRC Orders Filing Of Report On Water Contamination

The State Human Rights Commission on Monday ordered that the Chairman, Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board TNPCB, Commissioner, Chennai Corporation, and the Chennai District Collector should file a report to the Commission on a report regarding contamination of groundwater in West Mogappair.

Taking suo motu cognisance of a report in The Hindu dated June 21, a Bench of the Commission comprising Justice A.S.Venkatachalamoorthy, Chairperson, and A. R.Selvakumar, Member, said the officials should file the report on the various averments made in the news item. It should be sent to the Commission in three days. As per the report, the residents alleged that the contamination was due to leak of oil from a petrol filling station nearby......
