Even as rural Orissa is struggling to cope with scorching heat and acute drinking water crisis, rising power cost has made life miserable for those, who had even drinking water sources available at their doorstep.

Village Water and Sanitation Committees VWSC in different districts of the State have started to increase monthly user fees as the enhanced power cost has made drinking water in villages costly. Even as rains have brought down the temperature, there is no respite from water scarcity for Madhaberani village in Khandapada block. With tubewells lying defunct and water sources dried up, womenfolk have to walk down to Mahanadi river to fetch drinking water.

Similar is the situation in several villages under Bhapur block. For residents of Dasawantapur, Kainthapokhari, Baunsabati, Adipada, Chhelia, Badapadmavati, Karabara, Nandabara and Ragadipada, river Mahanadi is the only source of drinking water. The minister for rural water supply, Mr Pinepi Viswarup, said that the state government would spend Rs 10,000 crore to solve the drinking water problem in the next four years.

Speaking to reporters in Machilipatnam on Monday, he said the government is also planning to supply protected drinking water to the villages and interior areas. The government proposed to spend Rs 2,500 crore in the rural areas during next four years to solve drinking water problem......
