Avoid Washing Coaches With Drinking Water: CM

In view of the acute drinking water shortage faced by municipal corporations and other local bodies, Chief Minister Ashok Chavan has told the railways to minimise use of potable water for washing coaches and instead explore other sources.

Even as rains have brought down the temperature, there is no respite from water scarcity for Madhaberani village in Khandapada block. With tubewells lying defunct and water sources dried up, womenfolk have to walk down to Mahanadi river to fetch drinking water.

Similar is the situation in several villages under Bhapur block. For residents of Dasawantapur, Kainthapokhari, Baunsabati, Adipada, Chhelia, Badapadmavati, Karabara, Nandabara and Ragadipada, river Mahanadi is the only source of drinking water. The minister for rural water supply, Mr Pinepi Viswarup, said that the state government would spend Rs 10,000 crore to solve the drinking water problem in the next four years.

Speaking to reporters in Machilipatnam on Monday, he said the government is also planning to supply protected drinking water to the villages and interior areas. The government proposed to spend Rs 2,500 crore in the rural areas during next four years to solve drinking water problem......

Sops To Flat Owners For Rainwater Harvesting

The Guntur Municipal Corporation GMC has taken steps to protect groundwater levels in the city. To encourage apartments or house owners to set up rainwater harvesting pits the corporation is implementing the G.O. issued by the government to protect groundwater level.

According to the G.o, if an apartment owner is sets up a rainwater harvesting pit in his apartment and installs solar water heater, he will get 20 per cent concession in the property tax......

Water Scare: 511 New Borewells In 2 Months

Water-starved Mumbai is seeing a rush for borewells as well as water tankers. The BMC has built 511 new borewells in just two months. Meanwhile, the demand for tankers in a city burdened by a 15% water cut has seen around 100 new tankers added to the fleet of about 1,000 within a few months, said Parminder Singh Hanspal, president, Mumbai Suburban Water Transport Association. The BMC is spending on building borewells even on private properties, like housing societies. .....
