One in every three Hyderabadi households has access to drinking water supply only once in four or five days. About 30 lakh people living in 10 of the total 12 surrounding municipalities forming part of the GHMC continue to be hard pressed for drinking water.

Lack of drinking water, industries polluting ground water and lack of underground drainage network among other civic related problems are dominating the GHMC polls in as many as 50 of the total 150 wards in Greater Hyderabad.

Except for LB Nagar and Kukatpally municipal areas, water problem is common in all other peripheral areas.P. Ashok Kumar, a social worker, said: “In all the five wards of Malkajgiri, people face drinking water scarcity, lack of proper drainage facilities and poor roads.”

There are eight wards in Kukatpally municipal circle. Kukatpally turned a happening zone given its proximity to the IT hubs and metamorphosed into a real estate hotspot. Yet, development has not been overall and people lack most basic amenities.

Most of the new colonies and surrounding ‘basthis’ face drinking water supply problem while pollution from surrounding industrial areas is an issue we are forced to live with,” said Dr Vara Prasad, president of Brindavan Colony.
