Nayagarh Reels Under Water Scarcity
Source:   Express Buzz City   : Nayagarh Published On   01-06-2010

Even as rains have brought down the temperature, there is no respite from water scarcity for Madhaberani village in Khandapada block. With tubewells lying defunct and water sources dried up, womenfolk have to walk down to Mahanadi river to fetch drinking water.

Similar is the situation in several villages under Bhapur block. For residents of Dasawantapur, Kainthapokhari, Baunsabati, Adipada, Chhelia, Badapadmavati, Karabara, Nandabara and Ragadipada, river Mahanadi is the only source of drinking water. Fatehgarh, the largest village, depends on a tank the water of which is not potable.

In villages Kaliapali, Dhanchengeda, Nimani, Chakradharaprasad, Aainsiakhol, Baigunia and Badasaharaa where water table has gone down drastically, tubewells are either not working or emitting water unfit for human consumption. Fatehgarh water supply project which was set up five years back at the cost of Rs 5.50 crore to give solace to the perennially water-starved Bhapur block has proved to be a failure.

It is supplying piped water to just three villages against a target of 56 villages. According to reports, the project is supplying water to Ragadipada, Karabara and Saasana villages. The residents of Nimani village having a population of 3,000 people staged a road block at Bhapur bazaar recently after the administration failed to meet their water demands. Agitations like these are galore but the dministration is yet to act.

Nayagarh Collector Mrinalini Darswal visited Bhapur recently and ordered supply of drinking water through tankers. People, however, said the supplied water does not suffice. Sources said lackadaisical attitude of the RWSS department is the major reason for scarcity of drinking water in Bhapur block.
