The Thamizhaga Vivasayigal Sangam has demanded the closure of all dyeing units along the Noyyal, Cauvery and Bavani rivers and the Kalingarayan canal to protect farm lands from pollution.

Sangam's state president Dr M R Sivasamy told reporters on Tuesday that the sangam would stage a demonstration in front of the Collectorate in the first week of November to press for a 10-point charter of demands.

He said the present price of Rs 1,550 per tonne of sugarcane was not adequate for the growers. "It should be increased to Rs 2,500. Similarly, paddy price should be hiked from Rs 1,050 per quintal to Rs 2,000," he added. He also demanded a hike in the procurement price of cow milk to Rs 20 per litre, of buffalo milk to Rs 30 and of copra to Rs 100 per kg. He added that the NREGS should be extended to include farm workers.

Stating that coconut growers were a suffering lot as prices had come down to Rs 3 per coconut, he said that removing the ban on toddy tapping could help them out.
