Thrust On Rural Pipe Water Supply

The State Government has sought Rs 1,035.1 crore for covering 3,568 gram panchayats under the pipe water supply scheme. Out of the 6,234 gram panchayats, 2,666 have provision of pipe water supply.

Provision of safe drinking water has become a priority area for the State Government following outbreak of diarrhoea in several backward districts.

Lack of safe drinking water source has been identified as the main reason behind the outbreak of the disease in a routine manner every year.

The State Government has estimated in a memorandum submitted to the Thirteenth Finance Commission that Rs 3,212.8 crore will be required for providing basic and core services in the gram panchayats.

These include water supply, liquid waste management, street lighting, conservation and hygiene, drainage and sanitation, construction and maintenance of burial grounds.

It has sought Rs 314 crore for administrative reforms which include reorganisation of blocks. It said that Rs 1 crore per block is required for construction of new offices and residential buildings for 314 blocks.

According to the memorandum, Rs 1,214 crore will be required for conservation of minor irrigation projects and Rs 1 crore for plantation at the catchment areas of each of the 1,214 minor irrigation projects.
