Now, Dovondem Lake Contaminated With Sewage Discharge

Sewage waters have again come to haunt the authorities in the Commercial capital.

This time, the picturesque Dovondem lake at the northern entrance to the city has been left contaminated by the rampant discharge of sewage, so say locals.
The locals strongly feel that sewage waters find its way in the water body due to the faulty sewerage line laid in the Fatorda area of the city in the 80’s and early 90’s.

Incidentally, further down from the lake, sewage waters from the underground line has wrought havoc in the paddy fields near the proposed district hospital site. Sadly, despite inspection by the PWD Minister, Churchill Alemao and the district authorities, the sewage waters continue to flow from a broken chamber, inundating the paddy fields.

Warned ward Councillor Johnny Crasto: Residents of the ward made umpteen requests to the authorities to rectify the fault in the underground sewage line, but in vain. The residents would be forced to come onto the streets to seek justice”.

GPCC General Secretary Vijay Sardessai told newsmen that the sewerage network in most part of Fatorda constituency has crumbled as evident in the monsoons this year, when at innumerable places, drain water was seeping into the sewerage network.

He was very critical of the contractor involved in constructing the district hospital at Ambaji/Dovondem. Sardessai has alleged that inspite of warnings issued to the contractor, the latter showed least concern, while sewerage line has burst due to carelessness of the contractor. “The entire neighbourhood of the district hospital project is so critical of the contractor’s negligence that they are now contemplating to forcibly stop the project as they are made to suffer stink and health hazard due to constant breaking of the sewerage pipeline”, he added.
